Derek & Caitlin’s Audiobook of the Week: “The Martian” by Andy Weir
Today was the hottest day by far and for that reason alone was pretty rough. I had a restless night due to the wind again so we slept in a little in until about 7am. Most other hikers around us pack up their tents and are gone anywhere from 3am to 6am, so by hiker standards, we are lazy bums… I think the name of the game in the desert is to hike when it’s cooler and rest when it’s hot. We tried to rest at our water source today at noon, but shade was seriously lacking, so it wasn’t too rejuvenating. I’m sure we’ll get the hang of the midday rest eventually.
The cactuses have some really pretty flowers as you can see in the pics. It’s amazing the things you start to notice when you don’t have much to do except walk!
Derek and I both started listening to an audiobook called The Martian by Andy Weir. It’s about a man that gets stuck on Mars. As I listen, I feel like we are sort of on our own Mars out here, but it sure is pretty! I’m enjoying listening to audiobooks, so far Im on my third one!
We are camped just a few miles south of the highway where we will hitch into the town of Julian tomorrow. I’m a little nervous about my first hitch hiking experience, but I think we’ll have better luck as a couple. Fingers crossed. (I wouldn’t pick me up…. I stink!)
I’m looking forward to eating at a restaurant tomorrow and I would die for a shower. It’s hard to stay clean here in the dust and wind compounded with the lack of water. We are going to bed early to get an early start to town. Hopefully the wind won’t keep us up all night. I’m looking forward to a day in town!
